On Leslie’s 50th birthday, Michele gave her a gift that had been purchased on vacation in England. In the bag was a small, standing replica of a medieval knight and a card, “Happy Birthday! Here’s the man you’ve been waiting for your entire life—your knight in shining armor”. Sometime later, Michele and Leslie asked themselves, “Why have just your knight in shining armor? Why not have lots of dream men, just dangling from your arm?” The list of fantasy men began to grow: the Fireman, the Biker, the Handyman, and the man they’d fantasized about for years—Juan the Pool Boy. A 'Charming' Designer: Drew Gilbert Thomes - Jewelry Designer Gilbert Thomes Jewelers As a jewelry designer, Drew takes drawings and ideas and turns them into wax models from which molds are created to receive the liquid metal. As a wax carver working for others, Drew rarely saw finished jewelry or talked with customers. Now, over half of the pieces on display in his store are of Drew's design and he can enjoy the 'fun' part: "getting to see the customer's face light up". After 30 years, he is adept at carving what the customer is looking for- whether it is an architect who brings him a design in three views, accurate to the tenth of a millimeter, or a couple of women with the idea to create Hookupz charms...dream date at your fingertips TM. Drew talks about his experience with Hookupz charms TM: "The best part of making the Hookupz charms TM models has been the experience of watching these little guys emerge from the wax. There is no way to explain how the work is done. Maybe the 'intention' is what is most needed, because mostly they are just "wished" into being, while the wax changes shape seemingly by itself. It does seem to be necessary for me to hold the tools and the blob of wax and to pay close attention to the process, but other than that, the miniature heroes carve themselves into shape. And it's alot of fun as well - I can hardly wait to meet the next one. Thanks for the awesome freedom and opportunity of this commission.
